Fix HDMI problems without guesswork.

Use the Dr HDMI as a diagnostic and control point. Start with a simple chain, test a conservative EDID and then add complexity back.

Diagnosing HDMI problems systematically

A black screen doesn't automatically mean the cable is faulty. HDMI combines the video signal with EDID, Hot Plug Detect and HDCP. So test one variable at a time.

Simplify the chain

Test the source directly on the display. If that works, add the AVR, switch, splitter or extender back one by one.

Start conservatively

Use Dr HDMI bank 4 (720p), then bank 3 (1080i), and only then move on to the full profiles.

Force a new handshake

Change the EDID bank and wait until the HPD event has finished before testing again.

Copy a working sink

If the display works fine directly, copy its EDID to bank 8 with the middle button.

No HDMI signal or black screen

Test order

  1. Check that INPUT comes from the source and OUTPUT goes to the display/AVR.
  2. Switch on the source and display and choose bank 4 (720p).
  3. Wait about two seconds after the bank has been activated.
  4. If 720p works, test bank 3 and then bank 2 or 1.
  5. If no bank works, test a short known-good HDMI cable and a direct source→display connection.

If even a direct connection doesn't work, the problem is probably not just EDID. The Dr HDMI cannot repair a faulty port or a physically defective cable.

Picture disappears after standby or an input change

This pattern often points to a changing EDID/HPD state: the source sees the display disappear temporarily and reconfigures its output. A fixed Dr HDMI EDID can make sure the source keeps seeing the same display capabilities.

Approach

First copy the desired display EDID to bank 8. If the problem persists, test a fixed preset. With PCs, this can also stop the graphics card from repeatedly treating the HDMI display as removed/added.

Wrong resolution, refresh rate or compatibility

When multiple sinks are involved via an AVR, splitter or switch, the source may see capabilities that do not suit every device. Banks 3, 4 or 5 let you deliberately limit the source. Banks 6 and 7 are intended for your own EDID profile via the Windows utility.

Note: the original Dr HDMI is an HDMI 1.4a/single-link product. Do not use it as a solution for HDMI 2.0/2.1 features such as 4K120, VRR or 8K.

AVR, projector, splitter and extender

AVR + projector

A receiver adds an extra handshake link. A fixed EDID can help establish whether capability negotiation is the cause.

Two displays

Different displays can offer different EDIDs. Choose a profile the complete chain can handle.

HDMI over distance

EDID management can stabilise a negotiation problem, but it does not replace a sufficiently good cable/extender for the required signal bandwidth.
